GOVERNMENT GRANTS.
GRANTS TO HELP YOU GO ELECTRIC.
Driving electric doesn’t have to break the bank. There are loads of feel-good financial incentives and schemes in place to help you save money while making the switch. We’re talking generous grants towards cars and charging points, advantages and great company car benefits. Interested? Keep reading to find out more.
UP TO €5,000 TOWARDS YOUR ELECTRIC MINI.
To help more people to switch to electric for less, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers a grant of up to €5,000 towards brand-new, privately-purchased electric cars that cost up to €60,000 – including the marvellous all-electric MINI Cooper. Check out the full details below.
UP TO €600 TOWARDS A HOME CHARGE UNIT.
So, you’ve got your electric car (yay!) and now it’s time to charge it. Luckily, SEAI also offer a grant of up to €600 towards the purchase and installation of your very own home charger unit. To find out more about the grant and see if you’re eligible, head to the link below.
TAX BENEFITS OF ELECTRIC CARS.
The savings continue when you switch to electric, thanks to a range of tempting tax benefits:
- Until the end of 2023, electric cars (like an electric MINI) are eligible for relief from Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) up to a maximum amount of €5,000. Find out more here.
- The electric MINI also qualifies for the lowest motor tax band, costing just €120 per year. What a steal.
- Thinking about an electric MINI for a company car? Great choice. Electric vehicles currently qualify for a 0% Benefit in Kind rate (BIK) up to a certain value. This will be extended out to 2025 with a tapering effect on the vehicle value. So, if you get a company car between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2025, the original market value (OMV) of the car will be reduced by:
o €35,000 for cars made available in 2023
o €20,000 for cars made available in 2024
o €10,000 for cars made available in 2025
Any OMV left over after the reduction will be subject to BIK at the usual rate.
For example, let’s say an employee gets an electric company car worth €70,000 in January 2023. €35,000 of the vehicle’s value will qualify for 0% BIK, leaving just the remaining €35,000 that is taxable at the set rate depending on your annual mileage.
THE APARTMENT CHARGING GRANT.
You don’t necessarily need your own driveway to charge your car at home. The apartment charger grant is designed for bulk installation of chargers at a single location – such as an apartment development.
Management companies, housing bodies, local authorities, and commercial and private landlords can apply, with funding for up to 90% of the total cost available, depending on the type of applicant. That includes cabling, logistic, labour, and construction costs. Nice. Learn more and see how you can apply below.
